BOB SINCLAR @TIME SUPPERCLUB - SUNDAY JANUARY 10

Until only a few years ago, when you thought of global dance music hotbeds, you thought of New York, London, Chicago, and so on—but Paris? Hardly. In the late-1990s, though, that began to change when waves of fresh and funky club tracks started exploding out of the City of Lights. Dubbed “Le French Touch” by the UK music press, this new sound, inspired by (and freely sampling from) soul and disco as well as early New York and Chicago house, soon made Paris the new dance music mecca and the city’s young DJs and producers global club superstars. First came Dimitri From Paris and Daft Punk. Then, in 1998, the worldwide smash “Gym Tonic” dropped on an unsuspecting world, featuring kitschy vocals sampled from a Jane Fonda workout tape and credited to Bob Sinclar, a shadowy figure said to be variously a “spy, jewel thief, Riviera playboy, mercenary, high-class gigolo, sunglass model, and hardcore porn star.”

Despite the huge fuss that ensued over this international man of mystery, it turned out that Bob Sinclar was simply an assumed identity of one Chris Lefriant, who adopted the name and persona of a character in an old French spy film. And Lefriant was hardly a newcomer to the scene, either; in fact, he had been at the forefront of French dance music of all kinds since the early ‘90s, from acid jazz and hip-hop to the disco-flavored house music for which “Bob Sinclar” quickly became famous worldwide.

RHYTHM NATION 2009 : MASH-UP EDITION [SAT DEC 5TH]

I NIGHTCLUB SHUT DOWN BY THE REGIE DES ALCOOLS

Tuesday December 1st, 2009 - This just in! It is with great regret that we inform you that "I Nightclub" is now closed as of this weekend forever. The "Régie des alcools des courses et des jeux du Quebec" suspended I nightclub's liquor license as of this week for unknown reasons and it doesn't seem that there's anything that can be done at this point to get it back.

Tucked away in Montreal's Gay Village near Circus After-Hours, I nightclub's customers were known to be very loyal to the club and its staff as there aren't any clubs around there to club-hop too.

After speaking to some of those staff members, it was obvious through their emotions that a family had been torn apart and that this news had taken everybody by surprise as events were already lined-up for December. I nightclub will surely be missed by the thousands of customers who have had memorable nights there.

Montrealguestlist.com would like to wish the club staff and administrators the best of luck in their upcoming projects!

PRODUKT PRESENTS SANDER KLEINENBERG @OPERA [FRI NOV 20]

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009 - Superstar Dutch DJ and producer Sander Kleinenberg has built his international reputation on an ability to create different atmospheres, for myriad crowds, at venues all over the world. Kleinenberg is not only an artist who declines to stick to a single, easily defined sound, he also utilizes more than one medium to create a night out. Long at the forefront of integrating video imagery and other visuals in his VDJ sets, Sander includes Pioneer among his sponsors for these innovative performances.

The manufacturer has been involved with outfitting select clubs around the world with the SVM-1000 audio-visual mixer (which Kleinenberg helped develop), DVJ players, plasma televisions, and other custom video installations exclusively for his performances. Integrating music and images single-handedly requires sharpened skills and on-the-fly invention. "Now, in the process of DJing, I am in control of another dimensions. The thought processes are not just about music; there is a visual element as well." Which allows his to shape his identity, and stimulate crowds, in a host of fresh ways. "This is a whole new way of looking at what you do creatively. In the end, that is very challenging. It makes you more versatile as well. I love keeping on my toes."

CARL COX JOIN OUR REVOLUTION TOUR @OPERA [SUNDAY NOV 15]

A perennial favorite as the best DJ in the world according to fans as well as the major mixing magazines, Carl Cox has been a part of Britain's dance scene from the heady days of disco through to the global clubland of the new millennium, with temporary pit stops covering hip-hop, the rare groove movement, and the immense rave revolution of the late '80s. That large span of time has undoubtedly affected his choice of records, since Cox routinely detours through breakbeat, Italian house, and the dance mainstream during his usual sets of hard techno.

Perhaps the best testament to his mixing skills is his immense popularity despite his focus on music much more intense than the brand of arena trance spawned by Oakenfold, Sasha, Digweed, and others.

LAWLER'S VIVA MUSIC TOUR IN MONTREAL THURSDAY @TRIBE

Forward thinking, groundbreaking, precedent setting: not just the true essence of progression, but an apt way to begin a biography on the world renowned DJ/producer Steve Lawler. That’s progression, not to be mistaken with the term progressive, music Steve Lawler’s often been associated with. Lawler is much more than a progressive house DJ. A child of the acid house generation, he’s been busy with the beats long before genres were but a twinkle in clubland’s eye.

An electronic artist who defies generic boundaries, ever since his days organising the infamous motorway raves under the M42, Lawler’s set his own agenda, following his natural musical instinct behind the decks and in the studio. 2008 has been the best example of this; after 17 years of hard graft, more people are beginning to take note of Lawler than ever.

It could be said Fedde came out of nowhere, riding off the success of a hit record. Well, to set the record straight; this couldn’t be further from the truth. Le Grand has spent the majority of his earlier youth grafting, spinning records in his Native country and cutting tracks until the inevitable happened. Put your hands up for Detroit was produced in the bedroom, released by one of the biggest labels in dance, and it enabled Fedde to step out into the world of Electronic Dance.

His abilities in the studio are endless. FUNKERMAN LIVE @OPERA [SUNDAY OCTOBER 4TH]

@ Opera [CLOSED] (32 Sainte-Catherine)

Friday October 2nd, 2009 - Many love affairs start off in the bedroom, whether it’s Madonna, Britney, Justin or KISS adorning our walls, those early years in the dark depths of our teenage privacy can be some of the most important and formative. That was certainly the case for Dutchman Ardie van Beek, or Funkerman as he’s now known around the world.

But it wasn’t plastic pop bunnies that enamored a young Ardie – instead it was the sounds of Public Enemy, Eric B and Rakim and other heroes of the US hip-hop explosion that inspired him to take on the turntables and begin what was to be a journey into the very soul of funk. Religiously crate-digging through the annals of r’n’b and soul, he followed the samples back to the original disco and rare groove tracks, unearthing a whole history of dance music in the process. For the 13-year-old Funkerman it was as if someone had opened a musical treasure chest for him to play with.

Don't miss out on Funkerman's first time playing at club Opera this Sunday! NO GUESTLIST!
